Eight New Things To Do This Spring.

By Karen and Erica

We’re tired of winter, and ready for some entertainment. Are you, too??? Especially now that we are retired, the sky is the limit, right? We’d love to hear your ideas. Here are five of ours, all fccused on going places, or doing things, that are new, for us.

  1. Plan a trip. Doesn’t have to be far away, but does have to be somewhere we have not been before. Maybe Charleston, a historic site, and home to a brand new museum that is said to be magnificent—the International African American Museum. The local food seems right up our alley—we love corn bread, and She Crab Soup has the most tantalizing name. Time to taste some!

  2. Learn how to take a proper photograph. About time, really. The International Center of Photography is right here in NYC and has classes for beginners. Or maybe we can learn pet portraiture at Fotografiska, a splendid museum also right nearby. And if we do well maybe we will have earned at least a drink at Fotografiska’s amazing-looking restaurant, Verōnika.

  3. Find art in a new venue. We haven’t been to Los Angeles for a long time, and since we were last there a vibrant arts district has apparently come alive. We would love to see it, and it sounds like local food and drink options are pretty great there too.

  4. Try out an iconic recipe. We have never made Zuni Cafe Roast Chicken and Bread Salad—but we have often dreamed about doing exactly that. Seems like a production, but totally worth it! We’ll set a festive table and invite a couple of lucky friends. Follow the chicken with Zuni’s flourless chocolate cake. And whipped cream. Wash it down with Ridge Zinfandel. And then collapse, fulfilled!

  5. Get to know someone very grand. We would be so delighted to meet Wally Funk. She’s an amazing woman who seems to have a lot of fun with her life, and she is the oldest woman to go into space. Her smile says it all! Ms. Funk, please reach out if you are up for a drink with us!

  6. Go see some very grand nature. We’ve heard about sequoias forever, but never seen a grove of them. In photos they look stupendous, literally. We’re sure in person we would be astonished.

  7. Tour a new-old building. We want to see Google’s new headquarters in St. John’s Terminal in NYC, which we have watched being constructed as we have walked along the Hudson River. We delight in the way the old building was reimagined, and the landscaping—at least what we can see—is marvelous. We suspect the roof garden is pretty fabulous too. Apparently we need to meet a Googler to get us in. We’re on it!

  8. Plan a retirement home on the moon. We read this most extraordinary story about building a home on the moon. An architect called Xavier de Kestelier is designing habitations for the Moon and Mars. So exciting. We suppose we need to get some moon land first, and that might be complicated, but even thinking about it fires up our imagination.

How do you plan to celebrate the beginning of spring?
