Fifteen Apps That Make Travel Seamless.

By Sharon Kurtz

In today’s digital age, smartphones have become indispensable travel tools, revolutionizing how we plan and navigate our journeys. Mobile travel tools serve as comprehensive resources for travelers, offering various functionalities to facilitate every journey stage. These apps provide essential resources for seamless travel planning, from booking flights and accommodations to accessing weather forecasts and currency conversion tools. Additionally, many travel apps offer itinerary management, packing lists, and navigation assistance, ensuring travelers stay organized and informed throughout their trip.

Among the vast array of travel aids available, iPhone apps stand out for their accessibility and convenience. While many apps are also available on Android devices, I will focus on those tailored for Apple users.

Best Apps for Researching and Booking Trips

Preparing for a trip involves lots of excitement and considerations for safety and well-being. With the abundance of tools available, choosing the right ones can be overwhelming. However, by focusing on apps that address vital needs such as currency conversion and itinerary management, travelers can enhance their travel experience while staying connected and informed on the road. In addition to popular airline and hotel apps, several third-party apps offer comprehensive solutions for researching and booking trips. From aggregating flight and hotel options, these apps simplify the booking process and help travelers find the best value for their money.

  • Visit A City: Provides detailed itineraries and recommendations for popular travel destinations.

  • Find your perfect stay with Airbnb, curated collections of homes chosen for style, location, or nearby activities. Customize your search with filters, quickly narrowing down choices based on amenities or accessibility features. You can manage all your travel details in one place with the app, and I like to explore fun experiences led by locals with Airbnb Experiences.

  • Clio offers guided tours and historical information for popular tourist destinations. Organizing a trip can be daunting, but with the right apps, it can become much more manageable.

  • Apps like TripIt streamline itinerary management by consolidating travel confirmations and reservations in one place, allowing travelers to access essential information at their fingertips. With features like real-time flight alerts and itinerary sharing, the app ensures a smooth and stress-free travel experience. It organizes travel itineraries and provides real-time updates on flight status and gate changes.

Best Apps for Staying Connected

Staying connected while traveling abroad is essential, and messaging apps like WhatsApp provide a convenient way to communicate with friends and family back home without incurring roaming charges. WhatsApp allows users to send messages, make calls, and share media files over Wi-Fi.

  • Apps like Flighty offers comprehensive flight tracking and booking service for travelers looking to book flights. They help users find the best deals and stay informed about changes to their travel plans. Flighty provides real-time flight tracking, fare alerts, and booking options for flights worldwide.

  • The Travel Smart app provides the most relevant information and keeps you safe and informed while traveling. It includes government-grade travel warning notifications, access to local country information, including the United States Department of State, and the ability to call your national embassy. It also has a seven-day weather forecast for your selected location and more.

Best Apps for Entertainment on the Go

Long flights and layovers can be tedious, but entertainment apps like Kindle, Amazon Prime Video, and Audible offer a wide selection of books, movies, and audiobooks to keep travelers entertained during their journey.

  • Amazon Kindle offers a vast library of e-books and magazines for reading on the go.

  • Prime Video streams movies and TV shows for Amazon Prime members.

  • Audible provides access to audiobooks and podcasts for listening during travel.

Best Apps to Use at a Destination

Once you get there, apps help you explore a destination.

  • CityMaps2Go and Rome2Rio offer detailed public transportation options and route planning. Rome2Rio facilitates travel planning by providing transportation options and route comparisons.

  • Currency Converter provides live currency exchange rates and conversion tools, ensuring travelers have up-to-date information on local currencies.

  • What happens if you have to check out or go into your Airbnb outside the confirmed time and want to avoid dealing with your luggage? Nannybag Luggage Storage can provide options to store your bag or belongings, allowing you more freedom.

  • Have you ever been at lunch or dinner and attempted to split the bill with your companions? Tab—The Simple Bill Splitter—is an easy way to split the bill at the end of a meal.

With these essential travel apps, you can easily navigate every aspect of your journey, from planning and booking to exploring and enjoying the destination. Whether embarking on a solo adventure or a family vacation, these apps enhance the travel experience and ensure memorable and stress-free journeys.

We want to hear what you have to say.

  1. Thank you, Sharon, for this list of travel-related apps. We went to Europe recently – first time traveling back there since the pandemic. The cellphone and the apps have become essential. So much information was on QR codes. Not many menus … mostly QR codes. QR codes next to paintings in museums. Your article is very timely. Good to keep up with the technology.

  2. I’m loving Find Penguins app as an online travel journal. It tracks my route, photos, videos and daily blog entries. At the end of my trip I can print a book of my journey.
