Discover Ljubljana: Europe’s Best-Kept Secret.
By Sharon Kurtz
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. This unique combination, described as a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe, offers pedestrian-friendly streets, lively cafes, stunning architecture, and a buzzing cultural scene. My husband and I spent a delightful week in and around Ljubljana this summer and quickly realized it’s one of Europe’s most underrated cities.
A Historical Tapestry
Ljubljana’s history stretches back to Roman times, influenced by various cultures and regimes. The city was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. After Slovenia’s independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Ljubljana became the capital, flourishing as the country’s political, economic, and cultural hub.
The Heartbeat of the City
Prešeren Square, designed by architect Jože Plečnik, stands as the vibrant center of Old Town. Dominating the square is a sculpture honoring Slovenia’s national poet, France Prešeren, symbolizing the nation’s rich cultural heritage. The area is animated by 50,000 students, adding youthful energy. As you explore the colorful streets filled with cozy cafes and boutiques, you’ll follow the Ljubljanica River winding through the city center. Be sure to visit the iconic Dragon Bridge and the serene riverside promenade.
Overlooking the Old Town from a hill, Ljubljana Castle offers breathtaking panoramic views and a fascinating look into the city’s history through its museum and tower. The nearby Ljubljana Cathedral‘s stunning architecture and bell tower views is stunning. At the Central Market, we sampled fresh produce and Slovenian delicacies, with Potica—a traditional pastry roll filled with poppy seeds or walnuts, honey, butter, and spices—a standout treat.
Our Stay at City Hotel
During our time in Ljubljana, we stayed at the City Hotel near Prešeren Square. Its central location made exploring Ljubljana’s main attractions on foot a breeze. Our room was comfortable, clean, and modern, offering a perfect retreat after a day of sightseeing. We especially enjoyed the breakfast buffet, featuring a wide selection of baked pastries, fruits, and hearty hot dishes that fueled our adventures.
A Taste of Ljubljana: Culinary Adventures and Market Delights
Ljubljana has become one of Europe’s top culinary destinations, and its vibrant food scene is a delight for food enthusiasts. Locals recommended the weekly Friday market, Odprta Kuhna, where the market square transforms into a bustling street food paradise.
Our most memorable meal was at Gostilna Na Gradu, located within the Ljubljana Castle grounds. This inviting restaurant combines luxury with a relaxed atmosphere. The menu features ingredients sourced from the local market, and the sampler appetizer plate, with its array of pâtés, was a standout.
Exploring with the Locals
A walking tour with The Ljubljana Free Tour is a fantastic way to get to know the city with insights from knowledgeable locals. Our guide, Petra, vividly brought Ljubljana’s history to life, sharing personal stories about her family’s experiences in Yugoslavia and their transition to life in the European Union.
One of our favorite activities was taking a boat tour along the Ljubljanica River. As we passed under the Dragon Bridge, our captain shared fascinating tales about Ljubljana’s history and the legend of the dragons. We capped off our day by enjoying an aperitif at a riverside cafe, followed by pistachio ice cream at Cacao—highly recommended!
Embracing Nature and Sustainability
Ljubljana feels like a breath of fresh air, perfect for a relaxing walk or a peaceful moment by the water. The city’s parks and scenic riverside spots are lined with benches where you can soak in the surroundings. I loved wandering along the riverfront before the city wakes up. As you explore its charming cobblestone streets, majestic castle, and beautiful architecture, you’ll see how Ljubljana’s commitment to sustainability shines through its eco-friendly vibe.
A Scenic Side Trip to Lake Bled
Just 14 miles from Ljubljana, Lake Bled is a must-visit and one of Slovenia’s most stunning attractions. If you don’t have a car, numerous tour companies offer half-day trips to this picturesque location.
The nearly 4-mile-long walking path around Lake Bled provides a leisurely way to take in the breathtaking scenery. There are benches along the way to rest and admire the view of the Lake and the surrounding Julian Alps. After that hike, treat yourself to a slice of iconic Lake Bled crème cake. The delicious dessert is a layered combo of cream and custard between two layers of puff pastry, and it’s a must-try for anyone visiting Lake Bled.
Discover Ljubljana for yourself and experience why it’s genuinely Europe’s best-kept secret.
