Erica and Karen: Ten Differences.
By Erica and Karen
W
e are both lawyers, we are both married to men, and we both have delightful children. We are both in our 70s. We both love New York City. We both loved our careers, and we are now both entrepreneurial bloggers, much to our mutual amazement. We are also both remarkably accident prone. But that’s where the similarities end.
Here are some of our differences.
-
Erica’s family lived for decades in New York City or its suburbs. Karen was a Foreign Service brat who moved countries every few years. Guess which of us is more stable.
-
Karen does strength training most days. Erica exercises her fingers on alternate Tuesdays.
-
Erica just refuses to use a password manager, and pines for her Blackberry. (Some of the people reading this probably do not even know what a Blackberry is.) Karen keeps millions of passwords on her manager and would be lost without it.
-
Karen cooks Downtown. Erica cooks Upper East Side.
-
Erica likes sparkles on her clothes, but only in the context of beige or buff, in a well tailored and elegant outfit. Think Brunello Cucinelli. Karen likes funky, and shiny, and synthetic, often paired with neon. Think Versace Jeans.
-
Karen has renounced high heels altogether. Erica remains very competent in very high heels.
-
Erica likes animals and sappy stuff. Karen thinks both are overrated. Except for dachshunds. And sappy pictures of dachshunds.
-
Karen likes Miami Beach. Erica likes the Hamptons.
-
Erica likes White Lotus. Karen is not up to date on popular shows and relies on Erica for advice on the topic.
-
Karen has spiky white hair. Erica has a medium brown bob. We both color.
We enjoy our differences, and we like to think they give Lustre some of its pizazz. What do you think?

I love your effort to reach out and create a community of like-minded women. I’m on board. 👍
Love it!
I had fun with the list trying to figure out who in the photo was Karen and who was Erika. Thankfully the hair description solved the mystery.
Fun lists.
As my yoga teacher says "you do you"! That is how it should be.
I think you both are beautiful and I love Lustre!
Fabulous !!! vive la difference!!
You are obviously both practically perfect in every way! and I too really miss my blackberry, on which I could transcribe entire court hearings (think Lehman bankruptcy) without missing a beat. My children scorn my inability to achieve the same prowess on the apple iPhone keyboard. Fingers too fat, I guess.
Differences, when cultivated and understood, enhance perspective and enrich the product.
I had to keep scrolling back up to figure out who was who~ GR8 fun post! And…. how I LOVED my bb!! One question for Karen ~ WHY are you coloring YOUR beautiful white spiky hair????
Because otherwise it is mousy brown!!!
You are both fabulous!!
Love this. My split personality relates to both.
Love this!
You are all very kind! Thanks!
You’re both fabulous! Really enjoying your content in its many forms. Thank you.
If you were both the same in every aspect, you would bore us! Stay unique, stay relevant and stay as current as you dare to. Many of my retired friends have forgotten how to do a lot of things they used to do or just haven’t learned the new technology. This happens when you leave the workforce and no longer have to keep up with the trends. No problem, if you are at least up to date on what is going on in the world, you are current!
Had to google Brunello Cucinelli. $3,000 pants. Hmmm. Had to google White Lotus. Don’t have HBO. High heels have been sitting in closet since retirement. Love that you dare to, but how are those working for you if you are accident prone… I’m seriously thinking about buying a smaller water bottle for the pickleball court because (rapidly progressing arthritic) hands drop just about everything these days. Retirement is hard, as you’ve confirmed for us, but you give us hope. Love the spiky white hair. Love that you dye it white.
Erica and Karen sound fabulous!
Lustre is new to me. I retired 8 years ago at age 62. I’ve sort of regretted it ever since and wished there was a handbook on retirement for women so maybe this will be of interest! As a person with a middle income maybe your post is a bit over the top for me, we’ll see!
But I’m excited to check it out!
I’ll bet Erica has high arches because that’s what enables women to handle high heels after the universal stamina of youth wears out. And I’d say you two are the poster persons for pizzazz! (the only word I know with 4 zzzzs) And that filet mignon recipe really rocks!
Difference is what keeps things interesting. Love the conversations.
I too was raised as a military child, but always wonder why people can’t drop the "brat" tag; it has such negative connotations for such a wonderful experience.
