By Karen and Erica
The world is pretty crazy right now. It’s a good time for some diversions, Here are ten we recommend:
In theaters:
- Black Bag. A really elegant thriller, entertaining and glamorous. A fascinating marriage, and how to do it, at the center of it all. Watch for Cate Blanchett’s cheekbones alone!
- I’m Still Here. What do you do if you are a wife and a mother and a military dictatorship threatens everything? Set in Brazil in 1971. Brilliant.Â
- A Complete Unknown. (AppleTV+ but try to see it in a theater.) We promise you will have a smile on your face as you watch the young Robert Zimmerman start his journey to becoming Bob Dylan in old New York. Wonderful actors with excellent musical abilities set in authentic-looking locales.
On your couch:
- Becoming Katherine Graham. Amazon Prime. Katherine Graham became the publisher of the Washington Post after her husband’s untimely death. She faced extreme challenges—like whether to publish the Pentagon Papers in the face of gocernment opposition, and how to handle Watergate. The documentary discloses a captivating woman.
- Prime Target. AppleTV+. A fun thriller, set in Cambridge and other exotic locales, about numbers and archaeology and relationships. Excellent actors.
- .Zero Day. Netflix. Robert De Niro is an ex-president targeted by foes of all kinds. His character is interesting, and the challenges are timely.
- Wolf Hall, Season 2. PBS. Mark Rylance’s Cromwell navigates the madness of Henry VIII’s unstable reign. Brilliant.
- Thelma and Louise. Tubi. It has probably been a long time since you watched Thelma and Louise, which came out in 1991. Watch it again! It is really well acted, really relevant, funny and sad. And you get to see Brad Pitt when he was ever so young!
- Trial of The Chicago 7 . Netflix. An excellent courtroom drama about criminalizing political activity. Lots of fine actors. A different time, one that many of us lived through.
- Anatomy of A Fall. Hulu. A man dies, his wife is a target of investigation, and their son is a witness. Riveting family and courtroom drama.
- Disclaimer. Apple TV+. We almost stopped watching, because it is disturbing. but decided to watch to the end. Glad we did. A riveting story about love and loyalty and missed cues. And that amazing Cate Blanchett again.
- The Day of the Jackal. Peacock. Stylish and entertaining. Eddie Redmayne is clearly having fun playing a stone-cold killer.
- Eye in the Sky. Prime Video. The ethcs, and human costs, of drone warfare. Helen Mirren is a fine colonel.
We want to hear what you have to say.
