Have You Ever Made A Wardrobe Mistake?
By Erica and Karen
Have you ever found a stunning dress at a stunning discount? Did you try it on, and think, well, maybe it is a little tight but what a good price? Or maybe you didn’t think you had to try it on—surely it would fit. Did you then buy the dress (on final sale) and put it on for an evening out? And did you then face the harsh reality, thanks to your bathroom mirror, that the whole thing was just a huge mistake?
What then?
One of us has indeed fallen for an enticing dress because it is beautiful and on sale. Then was dismayed by how it looked. In fact, more than once! Whenever that happens, she feels compelled to wear the dress a few times. As a punishment. Then she gives it away.
The other one would never make such a mistake—but she has been known to buy fabulous shoes—with sparkles—that are actually too small, thinking perhaps the sparkles will expand. Her Lustre partner is the lucky beneficiary of one such misjudgment.
We know a few people who, having not shopped for clothes in the last two years, were over-exuberant on their return to the apparel market. Sometimes we can see what they might have been thinking. Maybe that the slinky look would suddenly suit them. Or maybe that the seventies are in again, so embroidered bell bottoms would be cool. Sometimes, we have no idea what they might have been thinking. Very few people can carry off yards and yards of puce tulle.
Now that we are older, we are more than ever geared to take risks. And we definitely enjoy taking wardrobe risks. However—we should have learned by now that shoes too small and dresses too tight are risks without rewards. But the adventure of it all sometimes tricks us!

I am 71 and worked in high fashion in styling and public relations as well as the showroom model for Valentino and Gucci and other top companies. Because I also sew, I know good quality from the inside out and I am never swayed by brands. After I moved on from these venerable fashion houses, I totally changed my perspective on fashion from classic to funky. I shopped in thrift stores. I made plenty of fashion mistakes because classic is what I feel good in all the time and I find it easy to dress happily in well-fitting simple clothes. I am now 71 and still make mistakes and still love to shop thrift (the thrill of finding an exquisite piece for next to nothing!) and when I make mistakes I either re-sell them on ebay or take them to the local thrift store and get a tax deduction.
Wow! Fascinating story! Thanks for sharing!
