Ten Good Movies.

By Karen and Erica

We do enjoy the social aspect of movies in a theater. WE like to be with other people, eating popcorn, and reclining. But when that’s not going to happen, we are grateful to be able to stream.

However you watch, here are ten we recently enjoyed–some new, some not so new.

  1. A House of Dynamite. Netflix and in theaters. Kathryn Bigelow can surely make an amazing, tense, cerebral, scary film. What would you do if you woke up one morning and learned that a nuclear bomb was headed to a U.S. city? This film will stay with you.
  2. Mincemeat. Netflix. A three-way wartime entanglement centered around an actual, crazy, tactic designed to fool the Nazis about where Allied troops were to land. Very British. Very fun.
  3. Sinners. HBO Max. Michael B. Jordan is twins who are trying to leave a life of crime by going home and creating something wonderful for the community. It all ends up in a night of horror. We don’t generally go for horror, but this film is so much more. Fascinating.
  4. Highest2Lowest. AppleTV. Spike Lee can sure make an engrossing movie. A twisty plot, a successful man forced to consider what might be next, and beautiful scenes of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. What more could you ask?
  5. F1. Prime Video. The pit stops make the movie. And of course Brad Pitt gets the girl. But great fun anyway. Especially if you like driving fast.
  6. The Amateur. Apple TV. Rami Malek is a really smart CIA decoder who does not have the brawn, or the physical instinct, to be an agent. But, as it turns out, brains are even more lethal. Clever, and great scenery, too.
  7. Nuremberg. In theaters. What made Hermann Göring preside over mass atrocities? A psychiatrist tries to understand as members of the Nazi High command await an unprecedented trial in Nuremberg. Well acted. Unnerving.
  8. Annie Hall. Tubi, Amazon Prime. Remember why you loved Annie Hall, and Diane Keaton. A wonderful film.
  9. Night Train to Lisbon. Amazon Prime. Moody, atmospheric. Charlotte Rampling is spectacular. Jeremy Irons is an earnest professor who unexpectedly upends his life. Which of us has not had that fantasy?
  10. Downton Abbey–The Grand Finale. Amazon Prime and others. Perfect for this season. We have known all of these people for generations, and they have interacted with each other for decades. They are older now than when we first met them. We will miss them. They left us, perhaps for the last time, feeling warm and sad and fulfilled.

We also saw One Battle After Another. In theaters. Great reviews. We didn’t share the enthusiasm.

What movies have you seen that you enjoyed? Or not?

  1. Hamnet is a must see… beautiful, moving! But try to read the book first, there is so much more than they could fit in the film. Made me start studying Sharespeare again!
