Hanging Out in Old(er) New York
By Erica and Karen
We enjoy taking our young(er) friends to old New York haunts that, to us, represented the epitome of success. With so many new places to go, we had forgotten how much we love the places that have adapted to new environments and continue to thrive (just like us). We take our place among all of the well-dressed people, none of whom is wearing jeans (except, maybe, downtown). Not surprisingly, we all settle right in.
Some of our favorites for a celebratory cocktail or two:
The Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlyle Hotel ( Frank Sinatra and the Kennedys—talk about style.)
The Monkey Bar at the Hotel Elysee (Tennessee Williams expired there.)
The 21 Club still channeling its fabulous speakeasy days.
PJ Clarke's. The original one, on 55th and Third. Nothing like its sliders to go along with your cocktail.
The River Café. The views are just spectacular and, since Sandy, it has come roaring back…good as ever!
The Odeon. For years, a favorite downtown spot, and now it’s “in”—again!
The Algonquin Hotel. The hum in the lobby lounge is conducive to Dorothy Parker-style repartee.
The King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel. We miss the pre-renovation bar, but the mural is still there!
Cheers!
