Five Style Pieces We Love

By Erica and Karen

We enjoy getting dressed purposefully and for fun. When we were young we heard the expression “putting on your face.” That referred to applying makeup, but we think it applies to every part of what we do to create a look. Here are five elements of style we especially value:

  1. Velvet trousers. Wide or narrow. Erica likes them in black or brown. Karen likes them in jewel tones, especially emerald.

  2. Plain, well structured, white tee shirts. Hard to find. Cotton or silk. Flatter everyone—especially now that its might get warmer. And they look well with velvet trousers.

  3. Black blazers. Wool, linen, cotton, metallics. A well-constructed blazer is essential to every wardrobe, and is a canvas that can be decorated with jewels and scarves. Or not. One of us likes crazy vintage Moschino blazers, and has a very old black tuxedo jacket painted with sparkly fish.

  4. Structured skirts. Karen likes them long (even though she is short) and Erica likes them short (even though she is long.) But the point is, they must have structure. Seams. Drape. They move when you do and make you look fabulous.

  5. Long linen shirts. White. Colored. But always good linen and classic shapes. So on hot days we will be (as is said usually of men) “a cool drink of water.”
