Seven Styles Ideas Now That Summer Is Really Over.

by Karen and Erica

We love light summery clothes—linen, silk, white, floaty. But now that Daylight Savings Time has been banished again (when will this foolishness end?) we need to think differently. We’re holding on to lighter stuff for now, but we know the end is near. Especially today!

When fall really kicks in, Erica favors chunky sweaters and wool slacks. And she looks good in them. Tan and taupe, classic, with classic gold jewelry. Also simple wool shifts. And high heels. Often, a leather jacket.

Karen sticks with color. Those silk jackets in jewel tones will be warm enough for a while, especially with bright scarves. Long skirts or white jeans, and flats—ballerina slippers or metallic Converse hightops. She also wears necklaces with large beads. And sunglasses, at all times. They are part of her image.

We will soon need coats—warm and waterproof. We like the idea of puffer coats recycled from plastic water bottles, though we wish they were made in more adventurous colors. And we love a generous hood, which is really hard to find.

With the coats, boots. Erica likes elegant leather ankle boots. Karen is intrigued by the combats that seem to be showing up all over. She can trip over anything, or nothing, so a thick, flat footbed is appealing.

Our colors inevitably will get darker. Black, navy. We actually like the dark colors when it is freezing outside. They make us look more sophisticated, right?

But we will forego sophistication for sun. We look forward to the winter solstice. It is the shortest day of the year, and signals the onset of the way-too-cold months of winter, but it also marks the start of longer days, and a trajectory that moves forward. To the floaty days.
