Five New Shows (And New Seasons of Old Ones) For The New Year: Fingers Crossed.
By Erica and Karen
As winter closes in, we’re beginning to think more seriously about what’s next up on our watch list. There are some exciting new shows, and new seasons of old favorites. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that at least some of them light us up and draw us in.
First, five new shows to watch out for:
-
A new murder mystery, The Afterparty, stars Tiffany Hadish (we love her) and other comedic superstars and centers on a high school reunion afterparty. Each character has his or her own episode to tell their version of what happened. (January 28, Apple TV+)
-
The folks behind Friday Night Lights and Parenthood are behind a new drama, As We See It, centered on three autistic twenty somethings navigating life and love. (January 21, Amazon).
-
The Gilded Age (HBO, January 24) is another Julian Fellowes, this time set in New York City in the 1880’s. Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon in more great costumes representing the old guard which clashes with the new.
-
Shonda Rhimes is at it again, this time with a drama, Inventing Anna, based on the real life story of a grifter who conned her way into New York high society—until she was exposed and convicted. Anna Delvey is the con. (February 11, Netflix).
-
It’s a way off, but we are looking forward to Apple TV+’s big bet, bringing to life Min Jee Lee’s Pachinko. We loved the book, and now we can’t wait to see this sweeping tale of a Korean family that moves to Japan during the turbulent turn of the century and the effect of their experiences on generations that follow. (Spring 2022).
For new seasons of old favorites, we are looking forward to Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. (February 18 on Amazon). What’s Midge’s next act going to be? Then there’s Billions (January 23 on Showtime). Our interest was waning a bit during the last season but was piqued at the end of Season 5, so we will see what Season 6 has in store. We just heard Season 2 of Bridgerton is returning on Netflix on March 25. Yay! But who replaces Rege-Jean Page??? Ozark is coming back on Netflix on January 21. Dates for Season 2 of The Flight Attendant, Season 3 of Ted Lasso (for those of you who stuck with it) have yet to be announced. We will keep you posted when we hear more.
