Nice: My Favorites in The Capital of the French Riviera.

On my recent travels through regions of France via train, I was awed by Nice, the Capital of the French Riviera.
From the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea to the verdant landscape, it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting than this sparkling gem between the mountains and the sea. A true open-air museum, artists through history like Modigliani, Matisse, and Picasso were captivated by the nature and light ofthe Côte d’Azur.
Located at the foot of the Alps, it’s only 18 miles from the Italian border. Nice gained UNESCO status in 2021 as the winter resort city of the Riviera for its architectural, landscape, and urban heritage.
Strolling along the legendary Promenade des Anglais was my favorite pastime. Fronting the entire Baie del Angles (Bay of Angels), it is one of France’s best-known and iconic seafronts. The region was shaped during the Belle Epoque era when well-heeled British travelers began to visit Nice in search of balmy climes.
Explore the narrow streets of Vieux Nice
I had a leisurely wander through Nice’s Old Town where you can lose yourself in the winding, narrow streets and alleyways that open onto lively squares. The distinctive architecture, with yellow and ochre facades and shuttered windows, charmed me. You’ll see traces of the city’s Italian past—the layout of Old Town has barely changed since the 1700s.
Browse the stalls at Cours Saleya market
The centerpiece of Old Town is Cours Saleya, a massive square with fresh produce and lovely flower stalls, considered one of the most exceptional markets in France. Foodies’ taste buds are guaranteed to be satisfied as there are many restaurants to sample the top Niçoise cuisine. I recommend the tasty street food specialties—pan bagnat, and socca, a crispy chickpea pancake cooked on a griddle and served in a paper cone for an authentic flavor of Nice.
Castle Hill
Castle Hill was once a mighty fortress but is now a peaceful forested oasis where you can spot the ruins of the former Chateau de Nice. The beloved park offers breathtaking views over the rooftops of the old town, the port, and the beach.
Walk up the wide cobblestone steps from Old Nice and discover quiet trails and an impressive waterfall. After you take in the panoramic views of the Port of Nice, descend the path to the marina before dropping anchor at one of several cafes around the quays. Relax while you sip your rosé and imagine one of those superyachts bobbing on the turquoise waters is yours.
Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel
While in Nice, I stayed at the luxurious Anantara Plaza Hotel. This Belle Époque landmark is an architectural jewel recently reopened and lovingly restored to its former glory. Facing the palm-fringed Mediterranean Sea, the 19th-century icon was completely renovated with the glamour and refinement of the Côte d’Azur.
The iconic property was inaugurated in 1848 as the Hotel de France and played host to famed artists and cultural luminaries.
Located just a stone’s throw from the beach, I wandered the Promenade des Anglais. Lined with historic hotels and palaces of the golden age, upscale shopping, and chic cafes, I soaked up the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Executive chef Denis Gamard creates an Asian-inspired culinary experience, offering Niçoise flavors with inventive twists on the city’s traditional dishes. The hotel’s rooftop dining terrace and bar provide a perfect setting for enjoying aperitifs while taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the stunning sunsets that grace the French Riviera.
For those looking to venture beyond Nice, the hotel’s prime location allows leisurely day trips to nearby glamorous destinations such as Monaco, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez. The charming hilltop villages of Eze and Saint-Jean are close by.
