Ten Movies For Labor Day.
By Karen and Erica
Hollywood is on strike, but there are a lot of good movies out there that we, at least, missed when they first aired. Here are a few to watch on Labor Day (yes, it is coming up!) while you are getting ready to fire up the grill.
Support The Girls. Younger working girls trying to survive. Empathetic. And sweet.
Living. Also about working, but about remembering to live while you are doing it. A truly wonderful movie starring Bill Nighy.
Working Girl. Sure, you have seen it, but you need to see it again. Remember what it was like back then? Remember the hair?
Norma Rae. Sally Field is a union organizer. Unions are reasserting themselves, so let’s recall what they’re all about.
The Devil Wears Prada. Meryl Streep seems to greatly enjoy portraying the boss from hell.
Magic Mike. You weren’t expecting that, right? It’s about younger working boys trying to survive. No reason to overlook it just because these particular working guys are pretty cute. And funny. Especially Channing Tatum.
9 to 5. A classic. Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda. Need we say more?
The Intern. Robert de Niro is the intern. A little hokey, but entertaining, and of course we like the trope of older workers finally being appreciated.
The Social Network. Really an anti-work movie, about one of the people who changed everything about work. Not necessarily for the better.
A Fish Called Wanda. It’s a great film, with our fave actor, Jamie Lee Curtis, and it reminds us that even criminals have jobs to do.
Happy Labor Day!
