Unveiling the Charms of Coastal Maine on a Historic Tall Ship.
By Sharon Kurtz
Coastal Maine is renowned for its rugged beauty, charming coastal towns, and rich maritime history. One of the best ways to explore this picturesque region is by embarking aboard a historic sailing schooner. These majestic vessels provide a unique opportunity to experience the area’s natural wonders and immerse yourself in the maritime traditions of Maine.
My husband and I spent an idyllic holiday cruising the waters of Penobscot Bay on the Lewis R. French. Launched in 1871, she is the oldest commercial sailing vessel in the U.S. and is a National Historic Landmark. The French plied the waters for 100 years as a cargo ship, carrying everything from bricks and lumber to granite and sardines. She has been comfortably refitted with cozy cabins, modern navigation equipment, and a full galley where the professional crew prepares delicious homemade meals, desserts, and hor d’oeuvres all day long.
We arrived at Camden Harbor with a couple of duffle bags in the waning days of the summer season and swapped out our plugged-in life for five days of pure sail and salty air. Like a journey back in time, we disconnected from the outside world. We embraced the tranquility of the Maine coast, enjoying the escape of sailing a historic Maine schooner. With no inboard engine, the ship’s itinerary is dictated by the wind, tide, and the captain’s whims, ensuring a unique experience with visits to off-the-beaten-path anchorages and charming coastal villages.
As you set sail, you’l find yourself surrounded by breathtaking coastal scenery in Penobscot Bay, considered by mariners as one of the best cruising bays in the world. The coastline is dotted with remote islands, rocky cliffs, pristine sandy beaches, and picturesque lighthouses, creating a postcard-perfect backdrop for your adventure.
The clear blue waters are home to diverse marine life, and you might catch a glimpse of seals, dolphins, or even whales during your journey.
During your sailing expedition, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history of these vessels from the warm and friendly crew, and they’ll share captivating stories of the schooners’ past. Spend the days trimming the sails, steering the vessel, and learning about the Maine coast and wildlife. Or sit back, read a book, and watch the magnificent scenery drift past as the schooner glides gracefully through the water. The choice is yours.
It’s the little details that make up the days and nights of living life aboard ship. My favorite perch was in the boat’s bow amidst the lines and rigging. I eagerly watched for dolphins and seals frolicking in the sea, and egrets and bald eagles swooping down from the shore pines.
The cabins on the ship are cozy but well-equipped. An unexpected bonus? The crew cooks up gourmet meals in the postage-stamp-sized galley below deck on the wood cookstove. With creative menus and the freshest local ingredients, each dining occasion was nothing short of a miracle. Your sea-going appetites will be satisfied and then some.
When the sun begins to set, The French settles into secluded coves or picturesque harbors and swings silently at anchor. The spectacular sunsets and celestial views are breathtaking. The darkness across the water and starlit skies give you a sense of floating in time suspended.
The highlight of our cruise was the all-you-can-eat lobster bake and bonfire on a private island beach. We were ferried to shore by the Snitch, a 10-foot wooden dingy. Lobsters and corn on the cob were cooked over an open fire with fresh seaweed forming a “lid” to steam the food.
The Maine Windjammer Association has a fleet of nine historic schooners, each offering a unique experience, accommodating between 15 and 40 guests per cruise. There are themed cruises to match your passions. Reach out for reservations, and more information.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a unique and memorable experience, embarking on a voyage aboard a historic sailing schooner along the coast of Maine promises to be an unforgettable adventure.
So set sail, breathe in the salty sea air, and let the beauty of Coastal Maine unfold before your eyes.
