Do you like thinking about Social Security? Do you understand what you need to know to maximize your benefits? Most people would say no to both questions. But I say yes!

I was a civil engineer for thirty two years, so I enjoy thinking about complex problems. Then, in 2011, I was introduced to the topic of Social Security. Because Social Security is a major part of the income of many retirees, often amounting to millions of dollars, I quickly became passionate about educating others on the topic, and in 2014 began teaching Social Security courses to finance and tax professionals. I became aware that soon-to-be retirees need, but don’t often get, accurate, personalized information about the specific rules and claiming strategies that affect their individual Social Security decisions. In 2015 I launched my business, Shedden Social Security & Retirement Planning, where I provide individualized Social Security claiming analyses and retirement cash flow analyses.

I also realized that soon-to-be retirees would be well served if other people, including financial professionals, were better educated regarding Social Security strategies. In 2017 I co-founded NARSSA to provide online education and training for financial and tax professionals to become Registered Social Security Analysts (RSSA). The five module RSSA program provides a thorough knowledge of the Social Security program and trains participants how to analyze clients’ claiming options to obtain their maximized Social Security income by filing for benefits at the optimal time.

I now have over a decade of experience providing Social Security education, consulting, and analyses and have authored numerous Social Security white papers, seminar presentations and articles in financial publications. I am frequently interviewed by news organizations about Social Security topics.
